Chery Raises the Benchmark for Battery Safety with Transparent Fire Challenge in Malaysia

April 15, 2026

SERDANG, 15 APRIL 2026 – Chery Malaysia successfully conducted its inaugural Chery Super Hybrid Battery Safety Challenge, reinforcing the brand’s long-standing commitment to battery safety through transparent, real-world testing.

The event was witnessed by more than 100 attendees from government officials and media representatives ensuring independent observation of the test process and outcomes.

Safety is at the core of our development process. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements, we conduct rigorous and extreme validation tests, and we demonstrate these tests publicly to help people understand the technology, the standards behind it, and why we are confident in its safety,” said Men Lin Bo, Executive Vice President of Chery Corporate Malaysia.

He added that with every Safety Challenge conducted, Chery continues to strengthen its consumer confidence, improve engineering processes and set higher benchmarks for the automotive industry.

The live battery test session took place after sharing session with Chery Battery Expert Zhang Wei Bo, allowing media to gain technical context before witnessing the demonstration.

During the Safety Challenge, the battery used in both Chery TIGGO 7 PHEV and Chery TIGGO 8 PHEV was subjected to a high-temperature fire test consisting of a preheating phase and direct flame exposure of 1min 20secs.

Throughout the test, the battery remained stable, without fire escalation, electrical failure, or uncontrolled deformation, successfully completing the challenge under extreme heat conditions.

The outdoor event provided full transparency, enabling media to clearly observe the battery’s condition before, during, and after the fire exposure. This approach reflects Chery’s belief that safety performance can be demonstrated in safe open areas, beyond laboratory settings.

The Battery Safety Challenge in Malaysia builds on Chery’s global battery safety programme, under which the automotive brand has subjected its battery systems to a wide range of extreme and real-world scenarios across multiple markets.

Previously, Chery has conducted a series of stringent safety challenges worldwide, including head-on collision and spiral rollover tests in China, validating battery stability under severe structural impact.

In Indonesia, the battery pack was immersed in seawater for 53 hours, testing resistance to corrosion and electrical isolation in highly humid and saline conditions.

In South Africa, Chery has also completed an offset frontal collision test at 50 km/h, further strengthening protection against real-world crash scenarios.

In Ecuador, a multi-angle live-fire test was conducted in which the battery pack was penetrated by six rounds of ammunition, proving its strength through its structural integrity under extreme and unconventional stress.

In the Middle East, Chery’s batteries were subjected to 60-degree seawater immersion in Qatar for 48 hours, as well as burial beneath Kuwait’s scorching desert dunes for 48 hours, showcasing its performance under prolonged exposure to heat, humidity, and environmental pressure.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, Chery conducted a battery scraping test, assessing resistance to abrasion and underbody damage risks.

Proven Safety Performance and Long-Term Battery Assurance

In addition to the safety challenge, Chery Malaysia also highlighted the strong safety credentials of its electrified lineup. The Chery TIGGO 7 PHEV has achieved a 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating with an all-time high score of 94.68 points and further distinguished itself by securing perfect scores in both Adult Occupant Protection and Safety Assist, making it the only plug-in hybrid model to obtain a ‘double perfect score’.

Chery Malaysia also offers extended battery warranty covers up to 10 years or 200,000 kilometres, and includes the battery power pack, drive motor, and vehicle control unit. This comprehensive coverage is designed to give customers greater peace of mind, supporting long-term ownership confidence and reinforcing Chery’s focus on dependable hybrid technology.

“When we look at our PHEV offering today, it reflects a very complete and thoughtful approach to safety and ownership confidence. From conducting rigorous and extreme safety tests, to providing long-term battery warranty support, and achieving a 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating with an all-time high score for the TIGGO 7 PHEV, each element builds on our long-standing commitment to protecting our customers.

These achievements are about delivering a well-rounded Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) that customers can trust. One that combines proven safety performance, dependable technology, and assurance throughout their ownership journey,” said Lee Wen Hsiang, Vice President of Chery Malaysia.
